Snow-covered for more than six months of the year, Livigno is a paradise for lovers of skiing in all its forms: snowboarding, Alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, off-piste, ski mountaineering and telemark skiing. Beginners and advanced skiers alike will find slopes to suit their degree of expertise on the 115 km of broad runs starting from the centre of Livigno and reaching a maximum altitude of 3,000 meters.
Livigno is the home of the famous Sgambeda cross-country marathon, and lovers of Nordic skiing will be entranced by the over 40 km of trails winding through the woods and offering splendid views. Snowboarders too will find the Little Tibet of the Alps an ideal location for fresh-snow runs and spectacular jumps in the well-equipped modern snowpark. And music, fun and telemarking are the main ingredients in the lively Free Heel Fest, a huge international meeting for lovers of “free heel” skiing held in March.
Those who want even closer contact with nature in the tranquil environment of the woods will enjoy snowshoeing along the variety of winter trails, or Nordic walking in summer to discover the Alpine flowers and animal life.
The winter cold transforms the summer waterfalls into walls of ice, vertical surfaces on which lovers of winter climbing can try out their ice-climbing techniques. There is also an artificial ice gym in the centre of Livigno, ideal for newcomers to this sport.
